FAQs

Who are Trip Leaders?

Trip Leaders are members of the club who have extra experience in one or more of the sports we do and feel competent enough to lead trips of their own. They work with the Head Consultant of their sport to plan and lead trips for the club and are invited to attend one or two leadership meetings as needed. In this role you can lead trips that you planned out or

Why become a Trip Leader?

Become a Trip Leader if you want to lead your own trips in the club and get more involved. This is also a necessary position to hold before moving on to being a sports consultant, so if you want to do that in your future you should apply to be a Trip Leader as soon as you are ready. You have access to special gear reserved for people running trips and you have more flexibility to run and go on trips than the average member, without the extra responsibilities of being a consultant.

What are the responsibilities of Trip Leaders?

Trip Leaders are not a club leadership position but they are occasionally invited to attend leadership meetings, however, they are not required to attend. Trip Leaders are responsible for being a good face for the club, being welcoming to new members and helping them learn, and following all club guidelines. Additionally, on trips that you lead as a Trip Leader, you are responsible for some of the paperwork as determined by your Head Consultant.

What is the difference between a Trip Leader, Sport Consultant, and Head Sport Consultant?

Unlike Sports Consultants and Head Sports Consultants, being a Trip Leader is not a club leadership position with responsibilities and requirements. It is a more flexible role you can fit to your own schedule. However, consultants have more power with their greater responsibility to help shape the sport in the club and Head Sports Consultants have the final say on all decisions within their sport made by their consultants and Trip Leaders. Being a Trip Leader is a great way to start to get involved in the club before moving on to higher positions.

How do I become a Trip Leader?

The first step to apply is expressing interest to the consultants of your sport and going on a trip with one of them. After that you can fill out an application on this page and if approved you must complete a first aid class and trip leader training. More detailed steps can be found on the Trip Leader Overview linked at the bottom of this page.

I was not selected as a Trip Leader after applying. Now what?

If you are not selected do not worry! You can try again next semester. It would be a good idea to talk to your Head Consultant to find out what you can do to increase your experience and show that you will be a good person to lead trips. If you are not selected it likely just means you need to build up some more experience so the club leadership knows that you will keep everyone safe and run trips smoothly.

Do I have to reapply each semester to be a Trip Leader?

No. Unlike club leadership positions, being a Trip Leader is an indefinite position that only ends if you quit, graduate, move to a higher position, or are removed as outlined in the Trip Leader Overview document. Once you become a Trip Leader, you will stay one unless something changes.
